Biathlon makes its debut at the annual Andrésar Andar Leikarnir
Biathlon made its official debut at this year's Andrésar Andar Leikarnir (The Donald Duck Games), an annual sports festival held in Akureyri around the Icelandic First Day of Summer.
This year's event, which took place on 23 April, was particularly special as it celebrated the 50th anniversary of the historic games.
This marked a major milestone for the sport, and the young athletes gave their utmost effort on the course.
They were met with incredibly enthusiastic and vocal support from spectators, who cheered them on tirelessly from the sidelines.
The event was formatted as an individual race featuring laser rifle marksmanship, drawing a total of 58 participants between the ages of 12 and 16.
According to guest of honor V. Rumiancev - former head coach of the Lithuanian national team and a current biathlon club coach - the competition was executed at a remarkably high standard.
This successful debut sends a clear message: biathlon is here to stay as a competitive sport in Iceland.
The sport's inclusion in the Andrésar Andar Leikarnir plays a crucial role in introducing and promoting the discipline nationwide.
Sincere gratitude is extended to everyone involved in the organisation and execution of the biathlon event. It is precisely from these moments that future champions emerge, as every great athletic journey begins with a first competition.
