Community Para Biathlon Day inspires new participants ahead of Winter Paralympic Games
With the Winter Olympic Games now concluded and anticipation building for the Winter Paralympic Games, 1 March marked a timely return to the foundations of sport: participation, opportunity and community.
In partnership with WheelPower, a community Para Biathlon taster day introduced more than 60 participants to the discipline, offering many their first opportunity to experience the sport first-hand.
Attendees were able to challenge themselves on the ski erg while also testing their accuracy on a laser rifle range — two key elements that define the unique challenge of biathlon. Throughout the day, the atmosphere was filled with enthusiasm, determination and a strong sense of achievement as participants embraced a sport that many had previously only watched from afar.
For several attendees, the event represented more than simply trying a new activity. Many spoke about the excitement of discovering a sport that felt accessible, engaging and inclusive, highlighting the importance of opportunities that allow people to explore new sporting pathways.
Grassroots initiatives such as this play a vital role in the continued growth and accessibility of Para Biathlon in the UK. By introducing the sport at community level, programmes like these help create pathways for future participation, build confidence among newcomers and foster a sense of belonging within the wider sporting community.
With the Winter Paralympics fast approaching, attention will soon turn to the international stage as British athlete Scott Meenagh prepares to take to the start line next week. Events like this serve as a powerful reminder of the impact that inclusive, community-driven programmes can have — and the inspiration they can ignite for the next generation of athletes.
The organisers extended their thanks to Jayne Kavanagh, Ben Gallagher and Steve Arnold for their support in delivering a successful and engaging day of activity. Appreciation was also given to the International Biathlon Union for its continued support through the #Biathlon4All project, which is helping to expand access to the sport and bring biathlon to new audiences across the UK.
