Greece brings summer biathlon to new audiences on International Biathlon Day
Greece celebrated International Biathlon Day 2026 with activities in Florina and Thessaloniki, introducing participants to the summer version of biathlon and promoting the sport to new audiences across the country.
While the event originally planned for 30 May along Thessaloniki's waterfront had to be postponed for technical reasons, it was successfully reorganised and held on 7 June in the heart of the city.
Summer biathlon activities took place in Florina on 29 May and in Thessaloniki on 7 June, bringing together athletes, ambassadors, federation representatives, club officials, and sport enthusiasts. Children showed particular enthusiasm, actively participating in all activities and demonstrating strong interest in the sport.
During the Thessaloniki event, participants had the opportunity to experience biathlon first-hand through roller-skiing and laser rifle shooting, testing their skills using specialised equipment including roller skis, laser rifles, and electronic targets. A presentation of the sport introduced visitors to the unique combination of endurance and precision that defines biathlon, while family-friendly activities ensured an enjoyable experience for participants of all ages.
The organisers expressed their gratitude to the Region of Central Macedonia, the Municipality of Thessaloniki, and the School of Physical Education and Sport Science for their support and cooperation. Special thanks were also extended to Deputy Mayor for Sports Koula Giannakidou, Deputy Regional Governor for Culture and Sport Christos Mittas, and Professor Dimitris Kaimakamis for attending the event.
By bringing biathlon into urban environments and showcasing its summer format, Greece successfully introduced the sport to new communities and demonstrated the growing interest in biathlon beyond traditional winter sport regions.
