“Hit or Miss” brings biathlon fun to Gothenburg

Sweden launched its International Biathlon Day 2026 celebrations on 23 May with a large-scale public activation during Göteborgsvarvet, one of the world's largest running events, introducing biathlon to new audiences in the heart of Gothenburg.

Organised in cooperation with the Swedish biathlon community and clubs from across the country, the event provided visitors with the opportunity to discover biathlon through a range of interactive and family-friendly activities designed to promote movement, teamwork, and healthy lifestyles.

Throughout the day, participants met representatives from Swedish biathlon clubs, learned more about the sport, and took part in biathlon-inspired challenges suitable for all ages and experience levels.

A central feature of the programme was the “Träff eller Bom” (“Hit or Miss”) concept, a fast-paced team challenge inspired by biathlon. Teams of four competed in a series of physical and coordination-based tasks combined with shooting activities, where every missed shot resulted in additional exercises such as burpees. The format created an energetic and entertaining atmosphere while highlighting the combination of physical effort, concentration, and teamwork that defines biathlon.

Visitors also enjoyed a biathlon-themed quiz walk, social media quiz activations, and introductory laser shooting experiences tailored for children, families, and newcomers to the sport. These activities offered an accessible first encounter with biathlon and encouraged participants to learn more about local opportunities to get involved.

As part of the nationwide celebration, Swedish biathlon clubs also received activity materials to organise their own “Hit or Miss” events and community activities, helping to extend the impact of International Biathlon Day beyond Gothenburg and into local communities across the country.

By bringing biathlon into one of Sweden's most popular public sporting events, the celebration successfully promoted grassroots participation and demonstrated how the sport can create enjoyable and inclusive experiences for people of all ages.
