On 30 May, the Biathlon Committee of the Icelandic Ski Association celebrated Biathlon World Day 2026 with the initiative “Biathlon for Everyone – Discover a New Sport!” in Akureyri, introducing children, youth, and families to biathlon through laser shooting, running activities, and fun skill-based challenges.

While the event was originally planned to include competitions, logistical challenges and delays in venue confirmation and equipment delivery led organizers to focus on promotional activities only. Despite extensive promotion and strong preparation efforts, heavy rain and temperatures of around 4°C forced the programme to be shortened.

Nevertheless, participants enjoyed a positive first experience of biathlon and received commemorative Biathlon World Day wristbands. An additional promotional activity will be held on 17 June, Iceland’s National Day, to continue introducing the sport to the public.

“Despite the weather not being on our side, bringing Biathlon World Day to Akureyri was a proud moment for our committee,” said Veronika Guseva, Chairman of the Biathlon Committee of the Icelandic Ski Association. “The joy and curiosity of the local youth who participated proved that there is a strong foundation for biathlon in Iceland.”
