Japan celebrates International Biathlon Day 2026 with Festival and Laser Biathlon Japan Cup in Sapporo
On 31 May, the Japan Biathlon Federation celebrated International Biathlon Day 2026 with the Biathlon Festival 2026 × Laser Biathlon Japan Cup 2026 at the iconic Okurayama Ski Jump Stadium in Sapporo, Hokkaido.
The event brought together children, youth, families, and experienced athletes for a morning of competition, athlete interaction, and introductory biathlon activities. Following the opening ceremony, participants had the opportunity to train and practice with members of the Japanese National Team, receiving guidance on both running and laser shooting techniques before the start of the official races.
The opening round of the Laser Biathlon Japan Cup 2026 featured competitions across multiple age categories for boys, girls, women, and men. Athletes completed running loops ranging from 200m to 400m, combined with laser rifle shooting in prone and standing positions, experiencing the unique challenge of maintaining accuracy under physical exertion.
Alongside the competitions, a dedicated “Try-It Zone” welcomed visitors and beginners throughout the morning, providing a safe and accessible introduction to laser shooting and the fundamentals of biathlon. The activity area allowed children and families with no previous experience to discover the sport and interact with athletes and federation representatives.
“Biathlon Festival 2026 proved to be a highly meaningful opportunity for everyone—regardless of age, gender, or prior experience—to experience and enjoy the true appeal of biathlon,” said Sari Maeda, Biathlon 4 All Coordinator of the Japan Biathlon Federation. “By incorporating the opening race of the Laser Biathlon Japan Cup series, many participants experienced the unique excitement of biathlon, while the direct interaction with members of the Japanese National Team inspired a deep admiration for the sport, particularly among children.”
Through the festival, Japan successfully promoted biathlon to new audiences, strengthened connections between elite athletes and local communities, and supported the continued development of a sustainable “Biathlon 4 All” environment.
